Tommies Basketball Squads Looking to Gain Momentum in Weekend Games

The St. Thomas University Tommies are back at home for a weekend of Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association basketball action at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym.

The Tommies will host the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics on Saturday and the Crandall University Chargers on Sunday. Games will be at 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm both days.

Fred Connors, head coach of the women's basketball program, said this weekend is about getting back to the simple things.

"We want to get back to the little things that drove our early success—ball movement and tough defense," he said. "We're in a bit of a rut, but the signs of breaking back out are there."

The Tommies have struggled in the second half of the season. They recently dropped a two-point loss to the Chargers in Moncton and a 65-57 decision to the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville.

"We really just want to feel good competing together and get some momentum rolling into playoffs," Connors said of the upcoming weekend. "We played MSVU tough in all our games, and against Crandall we want to have a solid bounce-back game."

The Tommies men's team is also looking to increase their finish rate at the rim in the final weeks of the regular season.

"We've been struggling with our shooting percentage, but I feel we're heading for a breakthrough," head coach Scott MacLeod said. "We have multiple players who can shoot the ball."

The Tommies, who are making a hard push to clinch the final playoff spot, plan to use the weekend to solidify team concepts and fundamentals.

"This weekend is a team builder for us. We will be focusing on defensive structure and preventative defense," MacLeod said. "We also need to be stronger with the ball in our finishes, passes, and rebounds moving forward."

After this weekend, the Tommies have only two regular season games remaining—they host the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves and visit the Holland College Hurricanes—before ACAA playoffs hosted by Mount Allison University, March 3-5.
