The Tommies women's basketball team saw growth out of a young group in the 2016-17 season.

With six rookies and one graduating senior, the Tommies had an impressive start to this year's campaign. They were 5-2 at the break and were no. 10 in the CCAA national rankings.

In the second half, the Tommies struggled to find their rhythm and dropped two tough road losses—one to the Chargers and one to the Blue Devils—causing them to fall from third to fourth place in the conference standings.

At the ACAA championships, the Tommies faced the Blue Devils in the quarterfinals and came out on top 68-61. In the conference semifinals, the Tommies battled the Hurricanes and were toe-to-toe with them for much of the game. Despite the Tommies efforts, the Hurricanes pulled away in the fourth quarter and took the game 79-57.
