Tommies Add Outside Shooter to 2017-18 Roster – Cole Harbour’s Leila Rashid Joins STU Hoops Squad

The women's basketball team at St. Thomas University has added another outside shooting threat to the 2017-2018 line up.

Leila Rashid, a five-foot-seven guard from Eastern Passage, NS, has committed to join the Tommies on the court next season.

"We're very excited to have Leila coming to STU," Tommies head coach Fred Connors said. "We were impressed with her work ethic and drive to be a better player. I think she will be a great fit for our program."

A senior at Cole Harbour District High School, Rashid was drawn to the tight-knit university community at St. Thomas but also the style of play the Tommies bring to the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association.

"They run a fast-paced, intense game on both ends of the floor that I knew I wanted to be a part of," Rashid said. "I felt very motivated after meeting the coaches, so I knew right away this would be the perfect place for me to develop my game."

In 2015-16, Rashid helped her varsity high school team capture the regional championship before falling just short of the provincial title. In recognition of her strong performance, she earned a metro all-star award.

"Leila is a very good shooter and had a great workout with us during her visit to campus," Connors said. "She's very athletic and can defend the ball well, which has always been a staple for our teams."

Rashid joins Alana Dowling of Quispamsis, NB, in the Tommies 2017 recruiting class.
