The St. Thomas University Tommies women’s basketball team continues to load up for the 2022-23 season with the addition of Grace Christie.

Christie, who’s older brother Christian is currently in his fourth year at STU and is a two-time STU Male Athlete of the Year, is a “defensive minded player” as put by Tommies’ head coach, Fred Connors.

Despite living in Yellowknife, Christie tells everyone she is from the East Coast, and is looking forward to coming to St. Thomas.

“I've always wanted to come back to the Maritimes for university, and the East is where I've always told everyone my home is, regardless of my physical location changing every few years,” said Christie. “St. Thomas seems like the perfect sized university to thrive individually and get the most out of the next few integral years. Having a brother who has experienced the great aspects of STU life is definitely a big factor as well.”

Christie will bring versatility to the Tommies as she has familiarity playing multiple positions with her previous teams. Coach Connors knows what type of player he is getting with Christie and looks forward to her donning the Green and Gold.

“I was very impressed with Grace’s attitude and work ethic,” said Connors of Christie. “She is an athletic player who wants to contribute to the team. She has three-point range and isn't scared to attack the rim.  Her defensive minded approach to basketball fits our program well. We are excited to have her come and develop in our program.”

Christie attributes a part of drive to her siblings, who are also quite active.

“Growing up in a very active family, I dreamt of becoming like my siblings and playing many sports. Trying out new things every couple years I've had some great opportunities to explore the world of athletics and grow to love it myself. A constant during that time was basketball. No matter where we moved I found a way to play, and when it came down to choosing one to try and pursue further it was the obvious choice. I love the community of basketball and am excited to live out my dream of playing on STU's team.”
