Soffee Nets 18, Leads Tommies Past MSVU

Fredericton, NB - Vanessa Soffee (Fredericton, NB) had a game-high 18 points to give the St. Thomas University Tommies victory over the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics by a score of 73-64.

Soffee came up big in the fourth quarter and scored seven points to steer the Tommies home.

STU coach, Fred Connors was pleased with Soffee's performance.

"That's what you get out of Vanessa," Connors said. She hit a very big shot for us down the stretch and made a couple layups that we needed but she knows how to play and she loves big games."

STU started the match with an intensity that was difficult for the Mystics to cope with. STU held the Mystics to just seven points in the first quarter, while scoring 22 themselves. The defensive side of the game was the key to the win.

Kylee Roi (Saint John, NB) and Jaiden Penney (Fredericton, NB) combined for 11 assists and chipped in with a combined 20 points. Connors was pleased with the defensive effort of his players.

"They have been working really hard in practice and we just talked a lot about energy off the ball and trying to get into gaps and those two were very active and I thought they defended really well," Connors said.

Sam Stordy (Moncton, NB), who also got into double-digits points, and hit four crucial free throws near the end of the game, joined Soffee and Roi in leading the Tommies to victory.

The Tommies next match will be on Sunday as they host University of King's College Blue Devils. The Mystics will make the trip to Saint John where they will play the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves.
