The St. Thomas University Tommies are pleased to announce the addition of Katie Sweeney to the women’s hockey team.

Sweeney will join the Tommies via the Oakville Hornets of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League. She currently owns 1.23 goals against average and a .949 save percentage, good for 4th and 2nd in the PWHL, respectively. She also led the Hornets to a Championship in the October 2019 Two Nations College Prep Series in Detroit, where she was named the Tournament MVP with a 22 save shutout performance in the finals.

“We have been watching Katie play for two years and were very excited to have her come and tour our campus and facilities,” said Tommies head coach Peter Murphy. “I was impressed with her level of play and willingness to constantly push herself to improve. Katie has the ability to be a difference maker in a game and adding her to our goaltending group puts the team in great position for the years ahead. She will join Marandee Hunter and Caroline Pietroski to give us what we believe will become the best group of goaltenders in the AUS and will rival any other U Sports program.”

Sweeney will add to an already impressive goaltending team that features Hunter and Pietroski who have combined to have the second-best team save percentage in the AUS.

It wasn’t just the hockey program that caught Sweeney’s eye. She is interested in the psychology program and enjoyed the feel of the city of Fredericton during her visit.

“St. Thomas University is a school that has a small town feel and a beautiful campus which really spoke to what I was looking for,” said Sweeney. “Not only does it have the academic program I wanted to study, but more importantly provides the personalized accommodations that suit my learning style. Once I was able to attend a Tommie's Varsity Women's Hockey game I fell in love with the atmosphere and it immediately became something I wanted to be a part of. I'm looking forward to September 2020 and being part of the STU community and becoming a Tommie.”

Sweeney will join former Hornets teammate, Aislynn Byers, in the Green and Gold.
