The St. Thomas University Tommies women’s hockey program continues to load up for the 2022-23 season, adding forward Amy Dvernichuk, to their recruiting class.

Dvernichuk comes to the Tommies from the Notre Dame Hounds, following in the footsteps of fellow Tommie, Claire Nimegeers, who is coming off her first season with the team, notching 5 points in 20 games. Dvernichuk is coming off a year with the Hounds that saw her rack up 4 goals and 10 assists in 30 games, which Tommies’ head coach, Peter Murphy, sees as a great fit for his program.

“She uses her speed to create chances for herself and line mates. She understands the value of holding onto a puck until a play can be made and also understands that if you want to create offence you need to go to the net.”

With the Tommies graduating five forwards following their 2021-22 season, there should be plenty of opportunities to fill the voids left by the veterans.

When it comes to recruiting, Murphy looks beyond the player’s ability on the ice. Academics, community service, and team cohesion are all vital parts to the recruiting process for Murphy. Dvernichuk checks all those boxes for her new coach.

“Amy plays a game that will fit in very well with our hockey program. On top of her on ice game, we believe Amy is a person of high character that will represent the university well in all she does. We are very excited about our recruits for next season and we look to develop Amy and her game when she arrives this fall.”

Dvernichuk becomes the fifth member of the ’22-23 recruiting class, with more in the pipeline for the Tommies.

Dvernichuk credits the atmosphere, both at the university and with the hockey team, for making her decision easier.

“I chose St. Thomas University as the atmosphere seemed like the best fit for me. I felt extremely welcomed immediately after making my choice. Both from Coach Murphy, as well as from future teammates reaching out offering support in my transition from high school to university. St. Thomas University provides the best opportunity to play university hockey with a positive program that is welcoming. All while having a wide variety of academic opportunities. St. Thomas has provided me with the opportunity of my dreams, and I am beyond excited to begin my future here.”
