Mounties top Tommies 32-7

The Mount Allison University Mounties Women's rugby team defeated the St. Thomas University Tommies 32-7 on a cold night at the Grant-Harvey Turf Field. The Mounties quickly made their mark on the scoreboard with Mountie Harley Siddall finding the try zone, scoring the game's first try six minutes in. The Mounties never looked back. By the 15th minue, it was 15-0 in favour of MTA.

Tommies' head coach Becca Baker said her team came out strong in the second half but were unable to get going in the first.

"Unforturnelty, we couldn't find out footing in the first half," Baker said.

After a strong end to the first half and start of the second, which saw the Tommies make numerous hits and protect the line, Mountie Kestia Milonga found a gap in the Tommies' defense, running down the left side of the field from beyond centre field.

Sarah Hetherington (Saint John, NB) would make a run herself, shortly before the final whistle, also making a beautiful line break to put the Tommies on the board. The conversion from Kyleigh King (Oromocto, NB) gave STU an extra two points, but it was too late for the Tommies to rally, as it would be their only points of the game.

Other tries for the Mounties came from Margie Faulkner, Eva Pestin, Kailey Mcgraw and Sydney Reid. McGraw also had a succesful conversion, adding to her point total.

The Mounties now own a record of 2-1 while STU falls to 0-3.

Baker remains confident in her squad, who are still battiling for their first victory.

"[There's] lots to work on and I think we can get there."

The Tommies will stay home for their next game but will act as the visiting team as they take on the University of New Brunswick (2-0) in the Battle of the Hill on Oct. 6. The Mounties will head back home in preperation of the visiting Holland College Hurricanes (1-1).
