Homecoming: Louisa Hughes Returns to Fredericton to Join Tommies Soccer Squad

Louisa Hughes is trading in burgundy and white for green and gold.

The Fredericton, NB, resident will join the Tommies women's soccer team this fall following two seasons with the Saint Mary's Huskies in the Atlantic University Sport conference.

"I chose to finish my undergrad at STU because the program I want to pursue—Native Studies—is offered there," Hughes said. "I'm really excited to begin my third year and play soccer for STU this fall."

Hughes, whose older brother Dylan played for the men's soccer team from 2010-2014, has a strong soccer background. She brings multiple years' experience in the Fredericton District Soccer Association and was named the Fredericton High School soccer MVP in 2013, Offensive MVP in 2014, and Female Athlete of the Year in 2015.

More recently, Hughes competed with the Picaroons REDS senior women's team that just captured its fifth consecutive provincial championship.

"Louisa is a talented soccer player and will undoubtedly have a major impact on our team, as well as the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association," Tommies head coach Michelle DeCourcey said.

"She's hardworking, versatile, and able to excel in more defensive roles, as a playmaker in the middle of the field, or scoring goals as a striker."

Hughes will join Natalie Boucher, of Fredericton, NB, Nikita McCartney, of Moncton, NB, Melanie LaPlante, of Moncton, NB, and Kaleigh Roberts, of Moncton, NB, as this year's new additions.

The Tommies open their regular season Saturday, September 9 against the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics. Game time is 2:00 pm at Scotiabank Park South.
