Tommies Improve to 6-2 with Road Wins Over DAC and MTA

The St. Thomas University Tommies women's volleyball team completed the first half of the 2017-2018 season with a pair of road wins.

The Tommies topped the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus Rams 3-1 in Truro, NS, on Saturday and followed that up with a 3-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville on Sunday.

With the wins, the Tommies improve to 6-2 on the season and are tied for second in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association standings.

Tommies vs DAC

The Tommies opened the match against the Rams with a 25-20 win, only to drop the second set 13-25. The STU squad rallied in the third and fourth sets to come out on top 25-19 and 25-10.

Leading the way offensively for the Tommies were Megan Mills, who had 15 kills and nine digs, and Deidra Jones, who had nine kills, seven service aces, and five digs.

Fourth-year setter Veronique McGrath had 23 assists and eight digs in the win.

The Rams were paced by Thea McLachlin, who connected for eight kills, nine service aces, and nine digs in the loss.

Tommies vs MTA

The Tommies continued their strong play on the road Sunday, defeating the Mounties with set scores of 25-16, 23-25, 25-17, and 25-8.

Jones paced the Tommies attack with seven kills and eight service aces. Hannah Millier added seven kills, four service aces, and one solo block, while Mills chipped in with seven kills and 13 digs.

McGrath posted another strong performance at setter, collecting 28 assists, two kills, three service aces, and six digs.

The Mounties were led by Rachel McDougall, who finished with seven kills and seven digs.

The Tommies are back in action in the New Year when they visit the Holland College Hurricanes on January 6. First serve is at 4:00 pm.
