Setter Jana Deschenes to Join Tommies in 2019-20

Jana Deschenes is set to join the St. Thomas University Tommies for the 2019-20 season.

With the Tommies losing setters Veronique McGrath and Lauren MacDonald to graduation, Deschenes will slot right into the depth chart with Emily Dickson and Caitlin Jones, who will both be entering their second year, with the Tommies.

The Mathieu Martin student has played for the high school as well as the Fredericton Spartans U16 team, Volleyball New Brunswick teams in the summer and in the Senior Women’s League in Moncton for the past two years.

“Jana is a very dedicated, hardworking and disciplined athlete,” said Mathieu Martin head coach Chantal Jaillet. “We have had the chance to see her grow through the years as a player and a person. She had been a great help with youth development in the Dieppe area, helping to coach a middle school team. She is demonstrating great leadership and will be a key player in her senior year of high school. You can expect to see her play hard and never give up on any plays.”

Tommies head coach Don McKay is eager to have Deschenes join the team.

“Jana is an enthusiastic person and a fast learner, who will work hard to become a great ACAA player,” said McKay. “As a Setter, she has good vision and speed to get to a passed ball. She is eager to learn and very pleasant to work with. I believe she will fit in well with our returning players. She will need to adapt to the speed of play at this level, but I believe she has all the necessary tools and traits to be successful.”

“I was looking at a couple different universities that would allow me to continue in an education program,” said Deschenes about her decision to come to STU. “When I went for the campus tour, I really liked the vibe and the friendliness at STU. I always had a passion for volleyball and was very interested in continuing to play during university.”
