Tommies Struggle in 2022 Finals Rematch

Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies dropped their final match of the weekend to the Mount Saint Vincnt University Mystics 3-0 at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym. The Mystics took all three sets in the rematch of the 2021-22 ACAA Finals with scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-15.

Tommies' head coach Don McKay said the Tommies need to be more consistent to find success.

"We got a few blocks and a few digs," McKay said. "But it wasn't as consistent as we needed it to be ... if we're going to play in playoffs, we have to be able to play one night and then go again the next day."

The Tommies jumped to a quick lead to begin the first set, leading the Mystics 10-6 before an MSVU timeout. From there, the Mystics caught fire to rally back and tie the set at 10. A big kill from Kathleen Boyle (Fredericton, NB) almost swung momentum back to the Tommies, but the Mystics kept rolling and took a 16-13 lead. They finished the first set with a 25-21 win.

The second set featured much of the same - STU once again was able to grab the first couple points from the Mystics. But the Tommies were unable to stay consistent, as the Mystics came back, exchanging points with STU before taking the second set with an identical score of 25-21.

Going into the third set down 2-0, the Tommies were unable to find any momentum - letting the Mystics finish off a clean sweep to take the match, putting the Tommies at a 2-3 record on the season.

"[MSVU] played well," McKay said. "They like to run a little quicker than most teams down the middle and we didn't react very well."

The Tommies will be back on the court on Nov. 19, as they take on the Université de Sainte Ann Dragons at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym at 6:00. The Mystics, who move to a 4-1 record, will take on the Dalhousie Agriculture Rams the same day in their home gym, at 12:00.
