Tommies Charge Over Crandall in Clean Sweep

Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies continued their winning ways, defeating the Crandall University Chargers in straight sets for their second consecutive sweep. Set scores were 25-16, 25-11 and 26-24. The Tommies swept the Dalhousie Agriculture Rams the day before.

Abby Lantigne (Fredericton, NB) led the Tommies with 12 kills and 13.5 points with seven digs. Kathleen Boyle (Fredericton, NB) had eight kills with seven digs while Julia Campbell (Sussex, NB) had 23 assists. Madison Ball (Truro, NS) had 13 digs to lead the Tommies.

On the Chargers side, Janelle Blanchette led the way with six kills and eight points along with eight digs. Gracie Andow also had six kills with seven points. Amy LeBlang led the Chargers in digs with 13.

The Tommies were sharp in their first two sets after going down 8-5. A 10-2 run jumpstarted life into the Tommies, coming off a victory the day before. They wouldn't trail at all until a close third set after the Tommies took the first set 25-16 and dominated the second set 25-11.

Tommies' head coach Don McKay said his team is too good to slip up with unforced errors, but he's glad they're doing it now rather than in the playoffs. McKay said the chemistry has been great with the team after winning 11 straight.

"Chemistry is a hard thing to keep track of - when we started, our two left-sides were out with injury," he said. "We've started winning when they came back and others have stepped up as well ... we're working hard."

The Chargers gave the Tommies a run in the third set, having 24-23 lead before two straight errors put the Chargers on the ropes. Danica Godin (Fredericton, NB) ended the match with a kill.

STU is now 13-3 while the Chargers fall to 2-14. The Tommies will head to Saint John to match up with the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves on Feb. 10 at 6:00pm in their next game while the Chargers host the Rams on Feb. 12. Scheduled start time is 2:00pm.
