The fourth member of the 2020-21 women’s basketball recruiting class is Carlee Canning.

Canning comes to the Tommies via the Dartmouth High School Spartans and Halifax Havoc, and brings with her her abiltiy to shoot the ball from the perimeter and length on the defensive side of the ball.

Canning knew the decision on what university to attend shouldn’t be taken lightly or be based solely on athletics. She trusted her gut when it came to her final decision.

Making a decision on where to go to university is a life changing decision,” said Canning. “This didn’t feel as hard as I thought it was going to be. When I came across STU as being an option, I got really excitedEveryone from the school that I have communicated with thus far has given me such a good experience, everyone is so helpful and welcoming. It felt as if it almost came naturally to pick this school. I never really second guessed it, and my gut feeling is always right. Basketball is a huge part of my life and playing after high school is a huge accomplishment for me.”

Connors and his staff are excited about the versatility and game that Canning brings to the court. She has the ability to space the floor, play multiple positions and defend hard.

“The coaching staff is very happy to have Carlee joining the program,” said Connors. “She is a very good shooter with lots of length as a defender. She can play multiple positions for us and I like the way she passes the ball. She has a team first attitude and really wants to develop and get better as a player. In my conversations with Carlee she is as excited to join the program as we are to have her come.

Canning’s basketball resume includes playing for her high school program, the Halifax Havoc, the We Will Win Youth Association team that won the Zero Gravity Championship, and she was named the MVP of the North Pole Hoops Showcase in 2017.

Canning has the same feeling of excitement that Connors has about joining the team and university community.

St. Thomas has a phenomenal arts program and that is exactly what I was looking for. The class sizes are also fairly small which is very nice. I’m eager to begin this new adventure, meet new people, create memories and hopefully win some championships.
