20 Tommies Named U Sports Academic All-Canadians

20 student athletes from the St. Thomas University Tommies have been named Academic All-Canadians by U Sports, doubling the number from last year’s winners.

The recipients of the Academic All-Canadian award maintain a strong grade point average during the academic year.

Grace Baker (Liscomb, NS), of the women’s track team, is a two-time U Sports Academic All-Canadian and has set the bar high for herself, both in training and in the classroom.

“I’ve always set high standards for myself and my academics are something I’m really proud of,” said last year’s co Most Valuable Athlete for Track. “To be one of the student-athletes recognized as an Academic All-Canadian is really rewarding. Balancing academics and athletics aren’t always easy, and it showcases that we work hard in both areas to successfully maintain that balance. It’s encouraging to be recognized for all the work I put in.”

Paige Jackson, of the women’s hockey team, graduated last year with a double major in criminology and psychology and has come back to partake in St. Thomas’s social work program. In Jackson’s four years at STU, she has been a three-time recipient of this distinction.

“I have to really time manage,” said the Stoney Creek, ON native. “Each moment of free time between hockey, school and work becomes so important. My agenda has also become my lifeline. It has every single due date, game, practice, and life event in it. Over the years I have learned how to prioritize and utilize all free moments of my day and that has really helped me become the student-athlete I am today.”

The Tommies have now been honored with this award 356 times since 2004-05.
