Tommies Basketball athlete Celine Sterckel recognized for stepping up for New Brunswick during Covid-19

Tommies Women's Basketball rookie Celine Sterckel has always been a community-first type of person.  The Covid-19 pandemic has drastically affected many aspects of life, but the Moncton native has continued to support her region despite the rigors of online learning, and practices when possible.

Recently, the Government of New Brunswick announced the recipients of the Stepping Up for New Brunswick campaign. Through this program, members of the public nominated individuals they felt had stepped up in various and meaningful ways to minimize the impact of the pandemic in the province.

“Over the course of the year, New Brunswickers have demonstrated resilience, leadership, generosity and support for one another,” said Premier Blaine Higgs. “From all regions of New Brunswick, individuals went above and beyond, for their neighbours, friends, family members and their communities. On behalf of all New Brunswickers, it is with great honour and admiration, that I sincerely thank each of the individuals who have been stepping up for our province, as well as the people who submitted their nominations.”

Celine was recognized during her Grade 12 year for her creativity, leadership and generosity in fundraising money for the student lunch bag program through Knights Community at Moncton High School.

"No one should have to worry where their next meal is coming from or whether they are getting a meal at all," mentions the Moncton High grad.  "The pandemic has put a lot of pressure on families specifically those that rely on my high school's lunch program and with the schools closing earlier on in the year, I thought this was a way I could help and let my peers know they are not alone."

Coach Fred Connors has always sought out the complete student-athlete when he approaches prospects for the Women's Basketball program.

"When we recruited Celine we knew she was a remarkably caring young woman. She loves helping others and cares greatly about her teammates. We are very proud of her and her accomplishments off the court."

Celine is still ambitious in her community involvement as she plans to: "volunteer at places like the soup kitchen, continuing taking part in relay for life, and continuing to volunteer in Moncton teaching kids how to play basketball!"

Also recognized by Premier Higgs was Soccer alumnus Alex Hahn.  Alex was commended for his concern for the wellbeing of others by redirecting funds toward transgender/non-binary/genderfluid youth via the Atlantic Wellness Centre.
