Hurricanes Storm Past Tommies 81-71

Fredericton NB - St. Thomas University men's basketball team fell to the Holland College Hurricanes 81-71. After a tough fought game and the Tommies pulling ahead in the third quarter  only to be overcome in the fourth.  

The Tommies entered the game slow but managed to pull off a four point lead over the Hurricanes. The Tommies started to fall behind in the second quarter with the Hurricanes putting up 29 points. The Hurricanes took the first half 43-26. 

At the half, 3rd year starter, Almin Dervisevic (Ottawa, ON) said that "everyone in the locker room knew that we had a let down in the second quarter and that we just needed to let the game come to us. When we are aggressive and in our man we can beat any team on any day." 

In the 3rd quarter The Tommies dropped 30 points to a respective 12 from the Hurricanes, battling their way back on the score board. Dervisevic and Geoff Lavoie (Ottawa, ON) both finished with 14 points each. Dervisevic added 11 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. Lavoie finished with 3 assists and 8 rebounds. 

 "The problem was recognizing when they shifted their defence to a zone or press," said Dervisevic. "We have to be better at recognizing how our opponents are guarding us". The Tommies were able to change the pace of the game in the third, their goal was "to keep it simple". "We actually ran through some of our actions on offense".

The Tommies shot 85.7% from the free throw line and the Hurricanes were 44% from the field. 

Adrian Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) finished the game with a game high of 24 points and 13 rebounds. The next leading scorer was Jordan Holness (Toronto, ON) with 22 points, 4 assists, and 5 steals in his 37 minutes of play. 

The Tommies face The Mount Allison Mounties at The Pit, 4pm on Saturday.
