Alex Lavoie brings size and experience to Tommies Basketball

Tommies Men's Basketball Coach is looking forward to a brotherly connection with the addition of Alex Lavoie, a 6'5 Centre/Power Forward of Ottawa, Ontario.  He will be joining the current team MVP and CCAA All-Canadian brother Geoffrey with the Green & Gold.

Alex has spent the last 10 years with the Canadian Forces including winning the Armed Forces National Championship held at nearby CFB Gagetown with the Val Cartier Lions , but jumped at the opportunity to hit the court with his sibling.

The older Lavoie attended RMC where he played 1 season for their basketball program, and mentions he wasnted to attend St. Thomas:  "I’ve been wanting to return to school to discover other interests in an academic environment; the small class sizes and well developed Spanish classes we’re definitely a plus."  Alex is looking forward to joining the squad: "My brother is going into his 3rd year at STU and likes both the school and Fredericton, him being there and vouching for the university was a big factor." The duo lived in Fredericton in their earlier formative stages and Alex will be looking forward to returning after years away.

HIs competitive spirit hasn't waned although he had a hard time finding opportunities to train and compete at a high level.  Alex said: "I expressed my interest to both my brother and the coach, John Hickey, to see if there could be a spot for me on the team, they were both interested and receptive to the idea."

Coach Hickey is looking forward to adding size and experience: "We’re really excited to have Alex join our group. Anytime that you can add 6’5” and athletic, you get excited. Knowing that he is ready to come in and work hard and help us continue to grow our program is even more exciting. Alex, already knowing a lot of our guys, will fit right in with our group."

Although Covid-19 has cancelled the first semester of competition of the 2020-2021 season, Winter Sport student-athletes will have the opportunity to start training on October 1st with coaches within the guidelines prepared by coaching staff in line with provincial and national sport bodies in hopes of a January restart of ACAA competitions.
