It may be the middle of winter, but that hasn’t stopped head coach John-Ryan Morrison from heating up his recruiting class for the 2019-20 season.

Morrison has locked up centre back Chidubem Nkoloagu as the first recruit for next season. The big-bodied defender comes to St. Thomas after his final season in the British Columbia Soccer Premier League. Nkoloagu will bring pace, aerial ability in the Tommies own third of the field and will compete for a starting spot in his first season.

“I am extremely excited to have a player like Chidubem joining our squad,” said Morrison. “This is a signing for the present and the future of our program with three of our back four starters from 2018 graduating next year. At the same time, from day one, I expect Chidubem to come in and challenge for a starting spot in what was already the league’s best four and adding someone who has experienced winning the BC provincial title, one of the most competitive youth leagues in the country, will only help us as we seek the ACAA banner in 2019.”

It wasn’t just the on field success of 2018 that helped make Nkoloagu’s decision to come to STU.

“I chose STU because of the great academic environment and because I think I will fit into the playing style very well,” said Nkoloagu. “I hope to bring energy and enthusiasm and a willingness to get better and practice hard everyday. In short, I will bring work ethic to the team.”
