Tommies Split Weekend Games With Nationally Ranked Hurricanes

The St. Thomas University men's volleyball team split a pair of games with the number 12 nationally ranked Holland College Hurricanes this weekend in Charlottetown.

The Tommies now stand at 3-4 on the season while the Hurricanes remain in first place at 7-1.

On Saturday, the Tommies dropped the first set 18-25 before storming back and claiming the second and third sets by two-point margins, 26-24 and 26-24, respectively. They dropped the fourth set 14-25 but managed to pull off the win in the fifth set.

First-year player Christian Christie (Langley, BC) led the charge with 16 kills, giving the Hurricanes their first loss of the season.

On Sunday, the Hurricanes came out strong and took the first set 25-16. The young Tommies squad fought back to win the second set 25-18 before letting the Hurricanes regain the lead with a 20-25 third set win. The Tommies went down 9-1 in the early goings of the fourth set – but a surge of blocking led by first-year middle Ben Singer (Halifax, NS) allowed the Tommies to crawl back. The set went back and forth until the Hurricanes eventually took the set and the match.

Christian Christie was named STU athlete of the week for his heroics, tallying 26 kills, two service aces, 11 digs, and one solo block over the course of the weekend.

The Tommies are back in action Sunday, January 14 when they host UNBSJ Seawolves. First serve is at 4:00pm.
