CCAA Championships – What You Need to Know Before the STU vs Red Deer National Quarterfinal

The Green and Gold earned an automatic berth to the national event by way of being host, however they will be representing the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association as champions – claiming their ninth championship in program history with a 3-0 sweep over the Holland College Hurricanes. They will now face off with the Alberta Collegiate Athletic Conference champions, the Red Deer College Kings in the national quarterfinals, Thursday evening at 6:00pm.

The Tommies were in the drivers seat the entire season in the ACAA. ACAA Player of the Year Christian Christie led the Tommies to a 12-3 record in the regular season. He paved the way offensively scoring 3.37 kills per set. He was an all-around star, tailing 29 aces from the serving line and contributing 17 blocks. First-year player Dallas Melnick has also made a name for himself in the ACAA. The Crystal Beach, Ontario native was named ACAA Rookie of the year. Melnick scored 3.7 points per set and was named player of the game for his performance in the championship match (9 kills, 3 aces, 4 digs). In the middle, Garret Dickson continues to be a dominant force. The third-year player was named to the ACAA all-star team for the second consecutive season.

 

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RED DEER

 

The Red Deer Kings went 20-4 in regular season play and won their 19th conference championship with a 3-1 sweep over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

 

The Kings are led by Australian setter and conference all-star Tom Wass. Wass led the ACAC with 9.35 assists per set. The Kings are also home to ACAC rookie of the year Carter Hills. Hills was the Kings most efficient hitter in their conference final, racking up 16 kills with a hitting rate of.583%. In the middle, Mark Dewit leads the way, he was named to the ACAC all-star team for his stellar performance this season.

Red Deer is one of the most storied programs in CCAA history, boasting 13 national championships. They are the reigning national silver medallists and last won gold in 2017.

HISTORY WITH RED DEER

 

  • This will be the fifth time St. Thomas and Red Deer meet in the quarterfinal round at nationals. The Kings have won all four of the past meetings.
