Tommies Sweep Seawolves

Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies brought the brooms out in their home opener with a 3-0 win over the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym. The set scores were 25-16, 25-20 and 25-21.

STU scored the matches first four points and would jump to an 8-1 lead, forcing the Seawolves to call a timeout to try and slow down the Tommies. But STU kept rolling, taking the first set 25-16 after Adam MacDougall (Calgary, AB) ended the set with a kill from the left side of the net.

The Seawolves bounced back in the second set, keeping up with the Tommies. The two teams exchanged points and were tied at eight points per side, as UNBSJ slowly pulled ahead to a 12-10 lead, forcing Tommies' head coach Henri Mallet to call a timeout and slow things down. STU recovered and pulled ahead, taking the second set 25-20, as Brenton Romanchuk (Drewberry, AB) ended the set in a near identical play as MacDougall.

The Tommies would attempt to cruise to a sweep, as they scored the first four points of the set again. But the Seawolves didn't let up, making STU work for almost every point. UNBSJ would get the closest they'd come in the match to winning a set, with the Tommies winning the final set 25-21.

Mallet said his team played how he wanted them to, after losing to the Holland College Hurricanes 3-2 last week.

"That's what we're looking for as a team."

Romanchuk led the Tommies in kills with 11 and points with 14. He also added five digs, also leading STU.

"We knew bringing him in that he had the potential to do what he did tonight," Mallet said of the Tommies' rookie.

The Tommies will matchup with the Université Saintee-Anne Dragons on Nov. 19 in thier next game. First serve is at 8:00 PM and the Lady Beaverbrook gym.
