Tommies Edge Mounties 62-61 in Season Opener

A made free throw by Lainy Dow with 3.5 seconds to go pushed the St. Thomas Tommies past the Mount Allison Mounties 62-61 in ACAA women's basketball action Saturday in Sackville.

After trailing by nine at half time, the Mounties made a strong push in the second. Some timely triples from Erin Steeves and Sarah McGeachy, coupled with offensive rebounds, allowed the home team to eventually take the lead.

The Tommies regained their composure late in the fourth and found Dow open in the paint, forcing the Mounties to take a foul. Dow went one-for-two from the line, giving the Tommies a one-point lead that held until the final buzzer.

The Tommies were paced by Jessica Patenaude, who had a doulbe-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sara Banks added 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists in the win.

Steeves led the Mounties with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Kiersten Mangold chipped in with 10 points and six boards.

The Tommies are back in action Saturday, November 5 when they host the University of Kings College Blue Devils in their home opener. Game time is 6:00 pm.
