Tommies Move to 12-3 With 68-45 Win Over Seawolves

Fredericton, NB- The St. Thomas Tommies continued their winning ways by defeating the UNB Saint John Seawolves 68-45 at the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium Sunday evening.

STU was led by rookie Emily Owens (Fredericton, NB), who finished the game with 14 points off the bench. Megan Baisley (Quispamsis, NB) led the Seawolves with 11 points. Three Tommies finished in double figures for points; Owens, her older sister Madison Owens (Fredericton, NB) and Lainy Dow (Fredericton, NB), but the story of the game was the defensive tenacity the Tommies started the game with. They held the Seawolves scoreless for the first nine minutes of the game and led 25-2 after the first quarter.

"We came out about as good as you could possibly come out," said head coach Fred Connors. "They were sharp, they were together and there was a lot of synergy. The defense was bouncing and active and the ball was moving. I just thought it was probably our best quarter of the season."

The Seawolves found their stroke in the second quarter as Autumn DeMerchant (Woodstock, NB) and Hannah Grossman (Riverview, NB) came off the bench to score 11 of the team's 25 points in the quarter, cutting the Tommie lead to 40-26 at halftime.

The Tommies would pull away in the second half on their way to their 12th victory of the season. The loss drops UNBSJ to 6-7 on the season.

STU will visit Crandall on Friday, February 1st while UNBSJ will host the DAL AC Rams on Saturday the 2nd.
