Tommies Get Contributions from Everyone to Remain Undefeated

Fredericton, NB – Madison Owens (Fredericton, NB) was the top scorer for the St. Thomas Tommies for the second game in a row, as they overcame the UNB Saint John Seawolves 70-43 on Sunday afternoon. This was the Tommies' final home game of 2021.

The game was another display of defensive ability from the Tommies as they kept UNBSJ down in each quarter. In the first and last quarter, they prevented the team from scoring double figures. The Seawolves had 12 players that entered the game but only two managed to get into double-figures.

Tommies' head coach, Fred Connors, spoke after the game and said, "I thought the second half we responded well and brought a lot more energy and moved the ball better than the first half but we have to make sure we are ready to come and play that way to start the game."

Owens did most of her damage in the first three quarters and put the game beyond doubt. She was able to score both from inside the paint and beyond the three-point line. She recorded a double-double as she finished the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

"We're really excited for her that it's all coming together for her right now, because she's been really solid for us and you get excited for someone when they're playing with a lot of confidence," Connors said when asked about Owens' recent run of form.

Owens was one of three players to get into double figures for STU. Celine Sterckel (Moncton, NB) continued her good run of games by scoring 13 points and Laura Nancekievill (Hartland, NB) put up 10 points as well.

The game was unfortunately marred by two injuries, one from each team. The Tommies started the game with just nine players and coach Connors was saddened that he had to deal with another one of his players being forced to sit on the sidelines.

"It's something else, I mean every time we play someone else goes down but there are no excuses, we have to come play hard and live with the results," he lamented.

The Tommies' next game will be on November 20th when they make the trip to face Holland in PEI. The Seawolves will also be in action on November 20th when they host Crandall.
