Tommies End 2022 with a Victory

Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies won their final game of 2022, defeating the Crandall University Chargers 61-46 at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym. Vanessa Soffee (Fredericton, NB) led the Tommies on both ends of the floor, recording 13 points, six assists and seven steals. Alyssa Jeffrey (Sussex, NB) continued her hot streak, racking up a team high 14 points with three 3-pointers while Sam Stordy (Moncton, NB) contributed off the bench in a big way with seven points and grabbing five boards. Alexa Rancourt continued her dominance for the Chargers, tallying a game high of 16 points. The ACAA rebound leader added 12 more to her season total, recording a double-double for the fifth time this season.

Tommies' head coach Fred Connors said after a great start to the game, his team struggled to find energy after.

"I thought we had a great start to the game and had some really good moments," Connors said. "But we really struggled to find a sustained energy and focus on both ends of the floor."

The Tommies started hot, finishing the first quarter leading 17-8, showing their tenacious defence they've played all season. STU forced six of the Chargers' 29 turnovers in the first, while knocking down three 3-pointers.

After a strong quarter, the Chargers showed resilience, going on a 6-0 run to cut the STU lead by six. The Tommies quickly shut down the Chargers' momentum, as Jeffrey knocked one down from beyond the arc. Stordy later grabbed an offensive rebound off her own miss, finishing through contact to boost the Tommies' lead to double digits. STU entered the half with a 30-19 lead.

The third quarter consisted of back-and-forth play, as the teams traded buckets, finishing the quater with 12 points each. Neither team was able to break through in the second half, as STU finished with their second win over the Chargers this season and sixth win of the year to move to a 6-2 record.

The Chargers are now 1-5 and won't be back on the court until the New Year, visiting the Holland College Hurricanes on Jan. 13. The Tommies host the Mount Allison University Mounties the same day.  Both games tip-off at 6:00 PM.
