Tommies Finish 7th at 2025 CCAA Nationals
Fredericton, NB - St. Thomas University took center stage as the host of the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Basketball National Championship.
The Tommies faced a challenging opening matchup against the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans, one of the top teams in the country (ranked 2nd in the latest ranking of regular season). Despite a determined effort, STU fell 73-42 in their first game. Playing in front of a full home crowd at the Richard J. Currie Center, the Tommies showed resilience, pushing their opponents to the final buzzer.
In their second game, STU put together a stronger performance against Géants de Saint-Jean, narrowing the gap and displaying improved cohesion. The Tommies battled hard but ultimately fell 74-60 in a highly competitive contest. The team’s grit and determination were evident throughout the game, reflecting their commitment to making an impact on the national stage.
The Tommies capped off their tournament with a sweet victory over a familiar Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) rival, Mount Saint Vincent University (current ACAA champions). In a close game, STU came out on top with a 71-67 win, securing seventh place in the championship. The win highlighted the team’s ability to adapt and improve throughout the tournament, finishing on a high note in front of their home fans.
With a strong final performance and an unwavering team spirit, the Tommies made the most of their opportunity to compete at Nationals. The energy from the home crowd provided a significant boost, and the experience gained will serve as a stepping stone for the program’s continued growth. Hosting the championship not only showcased STU’s hosting capabilities but also reinforced its presence in Canadian collegiate basketball.
