Fred is a STU men's basketball alumnus, and has been head coach of the Tommies since 2002-03. He's a six-time ACAA women's basketball coach of the year (2008-09, 2010-2014, 2019-20), and has coached the Tommies to five ACAA championships (2008-2009, 2010-2014) and two national medals—bronze in 2011-12 and silver in 2013-14. In 2013, he was named the CCAA Coach of the Year and was awarded the CCAA Coaching in Excellence Award across all sports. Fred's also been involved with the Basketball New Brunswick provincial programs, acting as head coach of the NB U16 and U17 teams, as well as the 2005 Canada Games team. Fred was an assistant coach with the Canada Basketball Centre for Performance in 2002 and was recently given the BNB Coaches award for long service in the province. As a player, Fred won two ACAA championships, was named the team's Rookie of the Year (1996-1997), was a two-time team MVP and ACAA all-conference player, was named the Tommies' Unsung Hero (1998-1999), and received the John Frederick Walls Memorial Award (1999-2000).
