Two-way hockey prospect Martina Barclay commits to Tommies

Winnipeg's Martina Barclay is the latest addition to the STU Women's Hockey team for the 2021-2022 season.  The 5'4 forward who splits her time between the Winnipeg Midget AAA Ice and the Kelvin High Clippers will be making the move East to pursue Journalism at St. Thomas.

"I chose St. Thomas because each person that I spoke to - whether it was someone from the team or the university - emphasized the importance of community and feeling like a family which is very important for me," Martina mentions in selecting the Liberal Arts University to pursue her education.

The high school team MVP for 2020 also adds that "with the high level of hockey and pursuing my career of choice while also being able to study partially in French made choosing St. Thomas quite easy."

Before Martina's 2020-21 season was put on hold due to Covid-19, she had 4 goals and 4 assists in 5 games for the Winnipeg Ice. Her resume impressed Tommies Head Coach Peter Murphy.

“She comes from a strong program and we know she is committed to getting better every time she is on the ice.  She is a strong, fast player with big a big shot who wants to make the difference in any game she plays.  Martina uses her speed very well on offence but her ability to use it defensively has allowed her to develop into a true 200 foot player which every coach covets.

Her efforts off the ice also was a welcome asset for Coach Murphy. "Off the ice, Martina is a strong student who is very community minded.  These are two key components to the women’s hockey program and will help contribute to her immediate success."

Although covid-19 has put a halt to the AUS regular season for the 2020-2021 season, the league is hopeful for a return in the Fall of 2021.

Barclay is the third recruit for the Tommies Women's Hockey program after the commitment of Olivia Stock and Natalie MacKay.
