Tommies Add Sharp Shooting Smith to Young Forward Core

Lauren Smith
Hometown: Camden, NS
Position: Forward
Club: Action Benefits Penguins
Potential Program: Criminology / Psychology

The Tommies have added their first new forward for their 2023-24 campaign. Lauren Smith, a 5'10" high-volume scorer who currently leads her team in scoring, has comitted to St. Thomas University.

Smith said she chose STU because of the opportunties she'll receive academically and athletically.

"I chose St. Thomas because everyone I spoke to had nothing but good to say about the campus, the people, the facilities and the academic opportunities," Smith said. "St. Thomas also has a smaller, more tight-knit community which I believe will give me a great balance between academics and athletics. After speaking with Coach Murphy and the players who reached out after I made my choice, it seems like a great group, which I am beyond excited to join.”

In the Maritime Major Female Hockey League U18, Smith has scored 19 goals and 11 assists for 30 points in 22 games - leading her club, the Action Benefits Penguins, and ranks eighth in the league standings. She's also scored five goals and six points in five playoff games this season.

Tommies' head coach Peter Murphy said Smith's drive to improve her game fits well with the Tommies' program.

“We are very pleased with the commitment of Lauren Smith to our program. Lauren seems very driven to achieve goals set out for her and we know we can help her get her game to a new level.  Lauren does not waste time with the puck when she gets it and we will look to put her in situations where she can use her size and offensive ability to the team’s advantage.  She will get an opportunity in her first year to make a difference on this team which I think is every rookie’s desire.”
