UPEI Panthers Prevail in Shootout Victory Over STU Tommies on Pink Think Night

Fredericton, NB - UPEI Panthers emerged victorious in a dramatic shootout, securing a win over STU Tommies at Grant Harvey Centre.

The first period showcased intense back-and-forth action, with both teams displaying solid defensive play. Despite several scoring opportunities, neither team managed to find the back of the net, resulting in a scoreless tie at the end of the period. Panthers had 10 shots, while the Tommies had 4. 

As the game progressed into the second period, the Tommies ramped up their offensive efforts, launching a series of attacks on the Panthers' goal. Despite Tommies pressure, after 40min of play, both teams could not capitalize on their chances, and the score remained deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the third period.

The third period saw both teams pushing harder to break the stalemate, with end-to-end action keeping fans on the edge of their seats. Neither team could find the back of the net, leading to a scoreless conclusion to regular time. At the end of regular time.

It was the third time Panthers went to overtime against STU in the regular season.  

As the game headed into overtime, the intensity only heightened, with both teams fighting tooth and nail for the win. The goaltenders stood tall, making crucial saves to keep their teams in the game. Katie Sweeney's kept the Tommies' hopes alive and prevented the Panthers from scoring with 5 seconds remaining on the clock. 

Overtime ended 0-0, with neither team finding the decisive goal. With the game still tied, it all came down to a shootout to determine the winner.

In a dramatic shootout, the UPEI Panthers emerged victorious after McKinley Nelson's clutch goal sealed the deal, securing the win in a shootout.

Katie Sweeney had 22 saves, while Erin Cabaday had 20. 

Standings remain the same as STU is in 5th place, while the Panthers, even though getting an important win away, remain in 7th place with one game left in the season

 

Final Score: STU Tommies 0 -  UPEI Panthers 1 (Shootout)

Tommies will play their last game of regular season tomorrow against their rival UNB, while the Panthers will host Dal Tigers. Both games will be at 7pm.
