Moncton edges STU in tight AUS battle

A goal by Clémence Dumesnil (Cassandra Call) at 7:14 of the third period was enough to give the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues a 1-0 victory (7-2-0-2=16pts, 4th position) over the St. Thomas University Tommies (7-3-1-0=15pts, 3rd position) on Saturday at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena in an Atlantic University Sport women's hockey game in front of nearly 350 spectators.

Dumesnil took advantage of a high shot about 15 meters to the right side of the net to catch goaltender Katie Sweeney by surprise for the only goal of the game. Sweeney made 25 saves in the loss and the Aigles Bleues Subway player of the game, goaltender Audrey Berthiaume, recorded the shutout with 18 saves, including 2 break-aways and one with about a minute to play. Moncton led 11-4 and 7-5 in shots on goal in the first and third periods, respectively, and the Tommies 9-8 in the second. Moncton was 0-for-3 on the power play and St. Thomas was 0-for-2. The game was tight with defensive units doing their job and offensive units struggling to get into the goal zone. There was a lot of time spent in the middle of the ice and against the boards.

The Aigles Bleues will be in Sackville on Thursday, November 16 at 7 p.m. to face the Mount Allison University Mounties. the Tommies will face the same Mounties on Saturday November 18th at Grant-Harvey at 7pm.
