Tommies Secure Playoff Opener with 1-0 Victory over Moncton

(Fredericton, NB) In a tightly contested playoff matchup, STU Tommies secured a narrow 1-0 win over Moncton Aigles Bleues in the first game of their playoff series, with Trinity Webber netting the decisive goal at the Grant Harvey Centre.

The first period saw both teams battling fiercely, with scoring chances on both ends of the ice, but neither could find the back of the net.

In the second period, Trinity Webber, at 05:05min, broke the deadlock for the Tommies with a crucial goal, giving them a 1-0 lead. Minutes after, near the end of the period, captain Ekaterina Pelowich had a golden opportunity to extend the lead with a breakaway chance, but Moncton's goaltender Boudreau made a stellar save to keep the deficit at one.

As the game entered the third period, Aigles Bleues pressed hard to equalize, but Tommies goaltender Katie Sweeney stood tall, making key saves to preserve the lead. In the final moments of the game, Moncton threw everything they had at the Tommies net in a desperate bid to tie the game, but the Tommies defense held firm, securing the shutout victory.

After the game, Laura Brown commented, "I think it was a really good team win; hopefully, we can continue like this in the series, we set the standard tonight, excited and ready for Friday".

With the win, STU Tommies take a 1-0 series lead in the AUS quarterfinals and will look to carry their momentum into Game 2 on Friday, February 16, in Moncton at 7 pm.
