Fredericton, NB - Despite a solid performance from goaltender Katie Sweeney, STU Tommies fell 2-0 to STFX, with goals from Ashlyn Garnett in the second period and Mackenzie Lothian in the dying seconds of the game.
STU Tommies fell 2-0 to STFX at the Grant-Harvey Centre. STFX dominated the opening period, outshooting STU 13-3, but Tommies goaltender Katie Sweeney stood tall, making crucial saves and keeping it scoreless through 20 minutes. STU struggled with two penalties but managed to hold off STFX's powerplay.
In the second period, Ashlyn Garnett broke the deadlock at 15:58, giving STFX a 1-0 lead. Despite continued pressure from STFX, Sweeney remained sharp between the pipes, keeping her team in the game.
In the third period, with only 45 seconds left in the third, Mackenzie Lothian iced the win for STFX with an unassisted goal at 19:15.
STFX outshot STU 37-18. STFX 0 for 5 on the powerplay, while the Tommies were 0 for 3.
Despite the loss, Katie Sweeney's got awarded three stars as well as Ashlyn Garnett.
Next STFX will take Dalhousie Tigers on Wednesday October 9th while the Tommies will look to bounce back in their next matchup on October 11 against UNB.
