Reds Edge Tommies in Battle of the Hill Shootout
Fredericton, NB - After a scoreless game through regulation and overtime, UNB claimed victory over STU in a shootout with a deciding goal by Rylee Strohm. Coming off a tough loss to Moncton, the Tommies were looking to bounce back, while UNB entered the game with momentum from their recent win against the Panthers.
The first period showcased intense, even play from both sides. Both teams generated scoring opportunities, but good performances from the goaltenders kept the scoreboard clean.
STU's defense held firm, and UNB's netminder stood tall, blocking everything sent her way, leaving the game scoreless at the first intermission. Tommies had 15 shots while UNB had 3.
As the second period unfolded, UNB came out with renewed energy, testing STU's defensive lines and peppering goaltender Sweeney with shots. Sweeney, remained unshakable, turning away each attempt. After the 40-minute mark, neither team was able to find the back of the net.
With the score still 0-0 at the end of regulation, the game pushed into overtime, where both goaltenders once again delivered brilliant saves, denying any scoring chances. After a scoreless overtime, the game headed to a shootout, where UNB ultimately claimed victory with a winning goal from Rylee Strohm. UNB added another win to their season record, while the Tommies were dealt another loss.
The game's three stars were Laura Brown from the Tommies and Cassie McCallum for UNB, both making an impact in the tightly contested matchup.
UNB will play November 8 against STFX while the Tommies will visit Halifax Novemver 9 to face DAL Tigers.
