STU Tommies Women’s Rugby 2024: Building a Legacy of Strength and Success
As the STU Tommies Women's Rugby team gears up for the 2024 season, there’s a palpable sense of anticipation and renewal in the air. With a new head coach, at the helm, a talented roster, and a fresh approach, the team is eager to capitalize on their potential and establish themselves in the league.
Reflecting on the previous season, the team showed great promise with a roster full of potential and talent. However, they struggled to find consistency and rhythm throughout the campaign. The new head coach, Gabriel Kim, who was not part of the team last season (replaced Becca Baker), but observed several games, acknowledges the challenges faced but is optimistic about the future. "Last season, the team had great potential and talent but was unable to find their groove. This year, we’re hoping to capitalize on this potential and build on the young players we have. We’re working on being able to finish if that makes sense," Gabriel Kim remarked.
This season brings exciting new additions to the team, with several experienced and athletic players joining the roster. The head coach is enthusiastic about the newcomers, stating, "The new players coming in have a very high ceiling. We’ve been lucky with several experienced and athletic girls joining our team, and as our first season with me as head coach, we’re aiming to build a team where everyone’s bought in." With minimal losses to graduation, the Tommies are looking forward to a strong season ahead.
The coaching staff has also seen some changes. Due to conflicting schedules, most of last season's assistant coaches will not be returning. Instead, the head coach will be working closely with guest coaches to ensure the team is well-prepared. "We’ll have to roll up our sleeves and get to work."
The offseason has been productive for the Tommies, with a focus on building strength, skills, and team cohesion. The team was fortunate to have access to a dome for weekly practices during the winter, providing valuable preparation for the summer rugby season. Many players participated in their hometown clubs, with two rookies even being selected for the U19 Spruce team. These experiences have set the stage for a promising season ahead.
The primary goal for the 2024 season is to lay the foundations for future success. With a new system in place and the integration of several new players, the team is poised to make significant strides. The head coach has set clear objectives: "Goals are to win against UNB and introduce a new team to the league. This will hopefully bring back the team towards its past success."
Leadership will be a crucial element in the Tommies' success this season. Key returning players such as Madi Walsh and Rookie of the Year Aurora Sutton are expected to play pivotal roles on the field. Additionally, senior players like Alexis Falconer and Savannah Simon will provide essential leadership, helping to guide the team through the challenges of the season.
"I’m feeling extremely confident that STU women’s rugby has the energy, strength, and talent to seamlessly execute our system on the field. The countdown is on for kick-off and we’re ready to deliver." said Savannah Simon
Recruitment remains the biggest challenge facing the team this season. With the need for more athletes to maintain competitiveness, the coaching staff has already begun outreach efforts for the upcoming years. "We’ve already begun recruitment outreach for next year and onwards, and our girls are fast at work trying to recruit girls already at the university," the coach explained.
Rookie Kamylle Bonefant is eager to step on the field Sunday. "Excited to step onto the pitch for my first game with the Tommies this season! We’re ready to scrum down, drive forward, and ruck with relentless spirit."
The STU Tommies Women's Rugby team is entering the 2024 season with renewed energy, and a commitment to building a strong foundation for future success. With talented new recruits, experienced leadership, and a dedicated coaching staff, the Tommies are ready to take on the challenges ahead and strive for a season filled with growth and achievement.
