Tommies Take Charge in Convincing 4-0 Win Over Chargers

Fredericton, NB – The St. Thomas University Tommies' Women's soccer team played out a convincing 4-0 win over the Crandall University Chargers on Sunday in their first game at the Grant-Harvey Turf this season.

Tommies head coach Michelle DeCourcey said "it feels great to win at home, especially with a convincing win."

The game started off slowly as both teams were trying to find their feet in the game. It was not until the 28th minute that the game livened up. STU was awarded a penalty and Cierra Meredith (Bowmanville, ON) dispatched it emphatically into the top-left corner to give STU the lead.

The Chargers started the second half well but all their good work went in vain when Amanda McNally (Fredericton, NB) snuck in front of her defender to flick the ball into the net, following a corner kick. The momentum of the Crandall charge was halted as STU took full control of the game.

The Tommies did not lift their foot off the gas and continued to attack. Rachel Haanstra (Fredericton, NB) capitalized on a goalkeeping error to make it 3-0. The final goal came from Meredith as she scored a fizzing shot from outside of the box. Each of STU's scorers grabbed their second goal of the season.

One of the issues STU faced last season was a lack of goals but they have started this season by scoring 10 goals in three games.

"I think we have a number of speedy and dynamic strikers and we have multiple players on the field who can put the ball in the net," DeCourcey said.

STU's next game will be in Saint John on Wednesday when they take on the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves. Crandall's next game will also be on Wednesday when they host the Dalhousie Agriculture Campus Rams.
