Seawolves Claw Back against Tommies

Fredericton, NB -  The University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves (6-1-1) clawed back from behind to snatch a 2-1 victory against St. Thomas University Tommies (4-0-4) on Wednesday evening at the Grant-Harvey Turf Field.

STU head coach Michelle DeCourcey was left disappointed after the game as she thought her team deserved the win.

"Though we started out strong, possessing most of the ball, we didn't stick to the smart style of play and ended up giving away the game that had been in our hands," she said.

The game started off well for STU as it only took five minutes to open up the scoring. Jayci Peck (Woodstock, NB) scored her fifth goal of the season as STU coasted through the first half.

In the second half, UNBSJ began to inch closer to the STU goal and eventually broke through. A corner kick was not properly cleared and the ball fell to Kayla Rowe (Saint John, NB) who put the ball beyond the keeper.

Another set-piece proved to be STU's undoing as Joce Splitgerber (Orono, ON) then pounced on a loose ball in the box in the final minute of the match.

DeCourcey saw some good play from her team and wants to focus on the positives from the game.

"If we can play like we did in the first 20 minutes moving forward, we will be difficult to beat."

The Tommies are now 4-4-0 after a chance to move within one point of the second place Seawolves. UNBSJ has tied the Mount Sait Vincent University Mystics with 19 points at a 6-1-1 record.

The next match for the Tommies will be away to the Crandall University Chargers on October 12th while UNBSJ will host MSVU on the same day.
