Leo Hayes Lion Brooklyn Saunders pounces on opportunity with STU Soccer

 New Recruit Alert

The St. Thomas University Women's soccer program continue to stock up on young talent for their 2023-23 season, adding midfielder and attacker Brooklyn Saunders of Fredericton.

Saunders, a product of Leo Hayes High School, has had the opportunity to practice with the Tommies multiple times throughout her soccer career, impacting her choice to start her new adventure with the Tommies. She also said STU's campus atmosphere and the opportunity to take a course while in her grade 12 year impacted her decision.

"A part of me always loved the thought of a smaller campus. I took a course at STU in my first semester of grade 12 and that's when I knew that's where I wanted to go," Saunders said. "The community, professors and even the campus were awesome.

Although she is staying close to home, it will be a new realm for the graduating Lion: "I'm looking forward to meeting all kinds of new people and learning in depth knowledge about subjects that I love. I am doing a Bachelor of Arts and taking courses focused on psychology. I am very excited."

Saunders said her relationship with former head coach Michelle DeCourcey and her coaching staff gave her the opportunity to prove she was fit for the next level.  It will remain the same with the new coaching staff under Coach David Itoafa.

Itoafa draws strength to the mid-pitch.  He points out "She is tenacious midfielder that has been a standout player in the capital region throughout her youth career. We are excited to have her joining the Green & Gold in the Fall!"

"Practicing with STU for the past couple of years has proved my ability to play for the Tommies," mentions Saunders. "Seeing the environment Michelle created for the players made me want to strive to become a part of their soccer community. I can't wait to meet coach David Itoafa and see how he continues to grow this team."

Saunders is the third recruit announced for Women's Soccer follow Katy Davidge and Caitlyn Steeves for the 2023-24 season.

The 2023 ACAA Fall Soccer schedule will be announced in May and Season Passes will be on sale in August, along with Training Camp starting at the end of August.
