St. Thomas University Tommies Fall 2-1 to University of King’s College Blue Devils in Intense Showdown

Fredericton, NB – The St. Thomas University Tommies fell 2-1 to the University of King's College Blue Devils on Sunday afternoon.

St. Thomas coach David Itoafa, spoke about his disappointment at the loss after the match.

"The championship comes down to details, and we're going to keep working and improving because after a loss, it exposes what you can improve on."

The Tommies were completing a run of five home games in a row and wanted to end it on a high. The game's first goal came from Tia Lovegrove (Ottawa, ON), who had been threatening the STU defence from the first minute. She was left open at the top of the penalty box and placed her shot into the bottom-right corner.

The Tommies were under constant pressure, with Jessica Weir (Greenwood, NS) having to stay sharp in goal for the entire game.

The equalizer came from Lindsey Smith (Rocky Point, PE). She took a shot from way outside the box, and her shot slipped through the UKC keeper's grasp and went in. Coach Itoafa spoke about Smith's performance after the match.

"Really nice performance from Lindsey, really good to see her fighting for those tackles and giving everything, taking shots and being courageous with that, and we're always happy when a first-year comes in and performs like that."

Lovegrove continued her onslaught on the Tommies defence, and she capped off her performance when she capitalized on a poor pass across the Tommies defence that gave her a free run at goal. She calmly scored what turned out to be the winning goal.

The Tommies next match will be on October 11 when they play away at the University of New Brunswick Saint John, while the Blue Devils will host Holland on Friday.
