Fredericton, NB - The STU Tommies opened their soccer season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the UKC Blue Devils at Grant-Harvey Field, highlighted by a crucial equalizer from Ella Mercer.
St. Thomas University Tommies kicked off their soccer season with an intense match against the University of King's College (UKC) Blue Devils at Grant-Harvey Field. Both teams had their share of opportunities in the first half, with UKC leading in shots. Despite the pressure, the score remained 0-0 at halftime.
The Tommies came out strong at the start of the second half, creating two clear chances, but were denied by an offside call and a foul. UKC seized the momentum and broke the deadlock with the first goal of the game at 64' scored by Georgia Gavas.
However, the Tommies didn't back down. Minutes later, at 74' Ella Mercer delivered a crucial equalizer from a corner kick, bringing the score to 1-1 and reigniting STU's hopes. The Tommies fought hard to secure the win, but the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Ella Mercer was named Player of the Game for her standout performance and vital goal that earned the Tommies a well-deserved point in their home opener.
