STU Tommies Women's Soccer Ready for a Breakthrough 2024 Season
Fredericton, NB – The St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies Women’s Soccer Team is set to embark on a promising 2024 season, building on the experiences and lessons from last year. With a refreshed squad, a focused approach, and new coaching additions, the Tommies are determined to make their mark in the ACAA and beyond.
Last season was a learning curve for the Tommies, who made it to the playoffs but faced challenges in maintaining consistency and resiliency. Despite some highs and lows, the team laid a solid foundation with strong performances from several first-year starters. The experiences from last year have shaped the team's approach this season, emphasizing a competitive spirit and a supportive environment that fosters growth.
The Tommies are thrilled with the new talent joining the squad this year. "Each new player brings unique skills and energy, and they’ve quickly integrated into the team’s dynamics, contributing to a positive and determined atmosphere. Additionally, the coaching staff has welcomed Olivia Rowinski and Lauren Kelly, whose expertise from playing with the Reds will be invaluable in pushing the team to new heights," said Head Coach David Itoafa.
The offseason was marked by intense training sessions focused on building strength, improving tactics, and enhancing skills. The team’s dedication during this period has set the stage for a competitive and successful season.
"I'm beyond excited to get this season rolling with our home opener this weekend. We have all put in the work over the winter and summer, which has shown this preseason. We have a talented group of girls and an amazing coaching staff. We are coming into this season strong," said Rachel Haanstra.
The Tommies aim to improve on last season’s results, focusing on consistency, controlling the tempo, and setting both individual and team goals. The team’s strategy revolves around a dynamic and aggressive style of play, leveraging their speed, teamwork, and resilience to dominate on the field.
The team’s success will be driven by key returners like Lindsey Smith, Avery Scott, Caitlyn Steeves, and 5th-year captain and 2nd team All-ACAA Abby Cameron. The captains and senior players are committed to leading by example, fostering a culture of hard work and unity within the team.
The team recognizes that consistency and adapting to different opponents will be key challenges this season. However, they are confident in their ability to overcome these obstacles through preparation, mental toughness, and strong team cohesion. With a balanced roster of experienced leaders and talented newcomers, the Tommies are poised to make significant strides this year.
Caitlyn Steeves shared, "We are a very hardworking and versatile team with lots of depth. We have been practicing hard this preseason; this season is shaping up to be a strong and competitive one for us."
