Tommies Jump to Second Place With 3-0 Win Over Mounties

Fredericton, NB- It was a battle of two of the top three teams in the ACAA as the Mount Allison University Mounties (12-3) fell to the St. Thomas University Tommies (11-3) 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21) Sunday afternoon at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym.

This match marked the first time these two have faced each other in league play, with the Tommies taking an exhibition match over the holiday break 3-1.

STU would jump out to an early 1-0 lead after controlling the play of the first set. Tommies head coach Don McKay was impressed with his team's performance in the first set.

"The girls came out really. I loved our first set. I felt the intensity dropped a bit after we won the second set, but they rallied and that's the sign of a good team, that you can lose focus for a bit and bounce back."

The Tommies won the second set, but found themselves trailing 17-13 in the final set before they would finish the set on a 12-4 run to win it and the match.

Rachel McDougall would finish the match with a game high 11 kills for the Mounties, while the Tommies offence was paced by Megan Mills, who had 9 kills. STU also got the job done at the service line, finishing with 8 service aces in the match.

With the victory the Tommies leapfrog the Mounties for second in the ACAA. The Mounties will host the Dal AC Rams Friday night, while the Tommies will host the MSVU Mystics on Saturday.
