Mills Highlights Tommies Awards Recipients

The Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association held their annual awards banquet for the volleyball seasons on Friday night, honouring their student athletes who excelled on the court.

Three St. Thomas University Tommies took home accolades as Megan Mills was named a CCAA All-Canadian and 1st Team ACAA All-Star, while long time teammate Hannah Millier joined her on the 1st Team and newcomer Jenna DeGooyer made her third straight appearance on the ACAA 2nd Team, her first as a Tommie.

Mills finished the ACAA regular season 2nd in total kills, 4th in kill percentage, 2nd in digs (1st among non-liberos), and 4th in points per set.

“Megan has been outstanding this year and deserves all the accolades she receives,” said Tommies head coach, Don McKay. “She has been solid defensively, involved in our receive the serve passing scheme and has been very strong and steady on offense. She has added across- body and roll shots to her arsenal but her solid hitting has been very impressive. In addition, she has been the leader we needed with the younger players and the addition of Jenna who played four years with a rival school.”

Millier joined Mills on the 1st Team after she finished the regular season with the most kills in the ACAA from a middle and having the 2nd highest kill percentage in the league.

“Hannah also has stepped up her offensive game with solid hitting and blocking and constant communicating,” said McKay about his star middle. “She has a tremendous personal drive to be the best she can be and follows a strong personal fitness regime. She loves to play defense and has welcomed being the second option when the setter plays the first ball. Her serve can be devasting for opponents. She loves to attack and we love her for it.”

Rounding out the Tommies All-Stars is 5th year outside hitter Jenna DeGooyer. In her first year as a Tommie she has impressed with her serves, attacks and improved defence on her way to finishing 5th in the ACAA in kill percentage and 5th in service aces.

“Jenna has been a great addition and has added maturity and another big presence at the net,” McKay had to say about his third All-Star. “She has worked hard on her defence and has been a force all over the court. Possessing one of the best top-spin serves in the conference, she takes nothing for granted and works hard each and every practice and game. She has fit in seamlessly and is most deserving of her All-Star award.”

The Tommies will face the Mount Allison University Mounties Saturday at 2:00pm in one of the semi-finals, while the top seeded Holland College Hurricanes will face the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics in the other semi-final.
