Sussex setter Campbell commits Tommies Women's Volleyball

Tommies Volleyball coach Don McKay has received a commitment from the ACAA recruiting hotbed of Sussex with the announcement that Julia Campbell will join the Green & Gold this Fall.

A 5ft 5Inch Setter / Right Side, Julia has been spoken highly of by her recent coaches, Kevin Manuel (Saint John Timberwolves Club) and Geoff Mabey (Volleyball NB Provincial Team Program). They both like that she is very coachable, willing to learn and is quick to the ball.

Coming from Sussex Regional High, Campbell is already looking for the atmosphere of STU's campus.  "I really like the small class sizes because I am someone who likes to be “hands-on” and engaged while learning. Knowing that professors make connections with their students is really comforting to me!

STU will offer classes that will make me look at our world differently and challenge my current thinking as well as prepare me for future endeavors. Human Rights and Sociology are two areas of interest”.

Julia was recognized in Sussex High School as MVP for Track and Volleyball as well as her work in the classroom when she will be graduating with Honours with Distinction this June.

Julia said that “after doing a virtual tour with two current STU students, I learned more about what St Thomas had to offer and I really like how inclusive the school was."

Coach Don McKay believes that Julia will have a good future as an ACAA setter.  "She is willing to put the work in with her hitters to make them effective. She can set from the floor as well as jump set. She is consistent with an accurate float serve.

McKay prides himself in recruiting leaders and dedicated student-athletes.  "I love her “team first” attitude and she will work at improving the areas we feel she needs to in order to become stronger and be a consistent player for the Tommies. I love that she is a good multi-sport athlete, that academics are important to her.”

Julia joins fellow Team NB member Chloe Little, of Rexton NB as the first recruits announced for the Tommies Women's Volleyball program for 2021-22.
