Tommies sweep Seawolves in final game of mini-season

The Tommies Women's Volleyball team was able to tip their hat with powerful send off for their 6 seniors with a 3-0 sweep of the UNB Saint John Seawolves.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-15, 25-17, with an additional two sets played which the Green & Gold vanquished 29-27, 25-21 in the extra games.

Wednesday's match marked the final contests for Megan Mills (Fredericton, NB), Hannah Millier (Fredericton, NB), Krysteena Clements (Weymouth, NS), Andrea Bell (Miramichi, NB), Olivia Ormond (Oromocto, NB) and Jenicca Jean (Upper Queensbury, NB).

Clements, an Education student, summed it up well for the St. Thomas grads.  "It felt weird to be back in the LB playing a real game, but I think it helped us stay in the relaxed state we played in.  It’s been an amazing four years, and I can’t wait to watch the team from the sidelines next year.

Regarding the match, Krysteena added "I think that we played relaxed and confident tonight. When we pass well we have no problem with getting a good set and putting the ball down.  I always say in my head “just like practice” and I think that’s how we played. Hard, relaxed, always pushing eachother and bettering the ball."

Left side Megan Mills echoed the comments: "It was definitely a different type of grad game but it was probably one of the best games to go out on. The energy was high, the skill level was great and overall it was just fun! It’s so surreal to think that we’re graduating but I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity.”

Middle Blocker Hannah Millier was grateful for her time with at St. Thomas. "It was surreal to play a final match in our home gym. I couldn’t be more proud of my fellow graduates, everyone played their heart out! I’ve had a lot of fun during my time as Tommie and last night is at the top. There’s so many people I wish to thank for the experiences and memories over the last 5 years.”

Jenicca Jean who stepped up as a libero left it out on the court in her final games. "I really couldn’t imagine spending my undergraduate degree without playing volleyball. Being a student athlete has been one of my greatest memories from my time at STU. I’ve met wonderful people and have had teammates’ and coaches’ support on and off the court"

Coach Don McKay had nothing but praise for his team in their final effort of the 2020-21 season. "That was awesome tonight. The things we worked on since Sunday was evident - stronger serving and better passing so we could run our offence. Our better players were very good tonight in all 3 areas - Hannah; Krysteena and Megan were dominant."

Execution from the Tommies helped setter Caitlin Jones (Fredericton, NB) deliver a solid performance.  "She had so many good passes that she had several options for attacking on many many passes," added McKay.

The Tommies would like to thank the graduating student-athletes on their dedication and devotion to the Green & Gold.
