Tommies Push Record to 2-0 With Win Over Seawolves

Fredericton, NB - In their second game of the season, the St. Thomas Tommies women's volleyball team took on the UNBSJ Seawolves in their third meeting of the year, including exhibition.

The women won the first two sets by a large margin (25-11 and 25-12, respectively), and saw strong hitting from first years Gabrielle Melanson and Abby Lanteigne. Third year veteran Caitlin Jones was vocal throughout and played with ease on the court, while Danica Godin adapted to play on the right side, as opposed to her usual position of middle.

The team was less than dominant in the third set and head coach, Don McKay says, "we didn't play poorly, but we didn't serve nearly as well as we did in the first two." They allowed a few  too many through from UNBSJ's left side, but McKay says making slight adjustments to their defense on that side will be a focus this week. The ladies edged out the last set 25-23, making this their second win of the season.

Mckay is excited for the season, and notes that they have several good players this year– four of which are trying out for the Canada Games volleyball team, and one who is trying out for softball. He mentions Abby Lanteigne, stating that "she can do so many things with the ball offensively, and is very, very quick," making her a player to watch out for.

Looking towards playing Holland next weekend, the team looks to fix some missed serves, but is happy with today's win. Ultimately coaching staff notes they are fortunate to have so many good athletes, and hopes to "mix them all in" next weekend.
