Tommies Hold Off Late Push From Chargers

Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies women's volleyball team were able to fend off a comeback from the Crandall University Chargers on Saturday at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym, taking the match 3-2 (25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 17-25, 15-12).

STU came out of the gates quickly and made very light work of Crandall in the first set, which they won 25-18. They won the second set thanks to Chloe Little (Rexton, NB), who finished the game with eight points.

"Chloe was a little spitfire for us today and she went out and took on a role that she was not used to playing," STU associate coach, Carys Storey, said after the match.

The Chargers used the encouragement they gained from that set and pushed on it the third. They took the game to STU and managed to claim the following two sets.

"Crandall played an amazing match and they were swinging on both sides of the court and we couldn't seem to slow them down," Storey said.

Danica Godin (Fredericton, NB) and Abby Lanteigne (Fredericton, NB) led the frontcourt performance. Godin finished with 15 points and Lanteigne with 12, while fellow teammate, Maddie McGregor (Truro, NS) finished as STU's top scorer with 15.5 points.

"Abby is a really smart attacker and she reads really well. Dan started slow but picked it up and got key touches for us," Storey said.

STU managed to string together a run of clutch plays in the fifth set. Crandall began the set strongly and went into and early lead. STU then pulled it back and won the final set by 15-12.

The Tommies will next be in action on Saturday afternoon when they host Holland in a top of the table clash. Crandall's next game will take place on Sunday when they also host Holland.
