Tommies Battle to 3-1 Win Over Dragons

Fredericton, NB - The St. Thomas University Tommies defeated the Université Saint Anne Dragons 3-1 Saturday night at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym. Set scores were 25-23, 21-25, 25-21 and 25-11. Abby Lanteigne (Fredericton, NB) led the Tommies with 12 kills and 11 digs with 12 points. Rookie Kathleen Boyle continued her strong rookie season, posting a game high in points with 13. Boyle had 11 kills and eight digs.

Tommies head coach Don McKay said he was much more impressed with his team's play compared to their last matchup with the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics, where they lost in straight sets.

"We had enough offense and enough blocks to win those close rallies that we couldn't do against MSVU," McKay said. "Overall, I was very pleased."

The Tommies dropped the first two points of the first set before finding their grrove, scoring eight straight to jump out to an 8-2 lead. The match was highlighted by multiple long rallies, as teams exchamged points after the Tommies 8-0 run, with the two teams tied at 23 in the first set. A huge block from the Tommies' defence gave STU the one-point lead before finishing the set with a win.

The Tommies weren't as quick to catch fire in the second set, as the Dragons scored the first three points before once again going point-for-point. The Tommies tied the set at 11 after a block from Ryley Horton (Calgary, AB), leading to Lanteigne slamming a point down for the Tommies, forcing USA to call a timeout. The Dragons would find momentum and take the set 25-21.

But the momentum was short lived - the Tommies and Dragons battled, as neither team was able to pull away in the third set, with STU taking it 25-21.

They'd finish off the game breezing to a 25-11 set win in the fourth to finish off USA and get their record back to .500 at 3-3.

The Dragons are now 2-4.

STU will visit the Dalhousie Agriculture Rams for their next game on Nov. 26, while the Dragons will host the Mystics the same day.
