Potential Program: Psychology

The St. Thomas Tommies have added their first recruit of the 2023 class - Jenna Murphy, a setter from Middle Sackville, NS, will wear the green and gold next season.

Murphy, originally from Chestermere, AB, describes herself as a consistent player with a strong attitude and work ethic. She's a product of the Lockview High School Dragons, where she won a provincial championship, and has played provincially for team Nova Scotia. Murphy has also competed at high levels in multiple sports, such as hockey, softball, badminton and rugby.

"I control the court well with my loud voice and lead a strong offense," Murphy said. "As well as being a strong server and defensive player," she added.

During her visit, Murphy also got a chance to meet some of the current Tommies, where she fit in right away.

"The coaching staff and the players were super welcoming, and I felt like I fit in right away. I also love how they all push themselves and each other to be the best players they can be, while being extremely supportive along the way."

Tommies' head coach Don McKay said her compete level stood out right away after having her practice with the Tommies.

"We were fortunate to have Jenna come for two of our practices and a high-performance workout," McKay said.  "She likes to compete - she wasn’t intimidated, she fit in well and moved the ball well. All which are things you look for in a setter. She has a great attitude and we expect she will be successful at this level."

Murphy choose STU because it fit her academic needs, such as her interest in psychology and future goals to work with children, as well as the welcoming environment STU provides.

"The school made me feel very welcome during my visit. I had an opportunity to tour the entire school and I loved it," she said of STU. "Fredericton is an amazing city."
